Why offline, for Portuguese
Brazil is continental, and once you leave the big cities the coverage thins out fast. The Amazon and the deep interior, long-distance buses through hours of nothing, dense favela hillsides where data can crawl, a prepaid chip that runs dry halfway through the trip. These are exactly the moments you most need to ask something, and exactly when a cloud translator goes silent. On-device means the answer is already on your phone: in the backcountry, on the bus, deep inside a market, no signal required. Portugal has its own dead spots too, from stone-alley old towns to the rural Alentejo.
You can read Portuguese; it's the Latin alphabet, and much of it looks close enough to guess at. Saying it is the trap: the nasal endings in não, pão, and São have no English equivalent, and Brazil and Portugal pronounce the same word so differently that the spelling tells you almost nothing. A translator that speaks the phrase aloud fixes that: you read the English, it says the Portuguese for you, each word lit up as it lands.
