Why offline, for German
Germany is one of the wealthiest countries on earth and, oddly, one of the more frustrating for mobile coverage. The dead zones are common enough to have their own word, das Funkloch. Regional lines through Bavaria, the valleys of Austria and Switzerland, the long tunnel runs: your bars drop and stay dropped. Germany also still moves on cash far more than most visitors expect, so you spend real time in small shops and bakeries where you have to speak, not tap. On-device means the translator answers in airplane mode, on the platform, mid-tunnel, exactly where a cloud app just sits there loading.
German you can read; it's saying it that trips you up. The umlauts, the sharp ß, the throat-clearing "ch", a w that comes out as an English v: a word looks flat and obvious on the page, then lands wrong the instant you try it aloud, and one compound sign can pack three words into a single unbroken string. A translator that speaks the line back to you, one word at a time, is what actually helps here, and a full, natural sentence keeps you on the polite Sie a stranger expects, not the too-familiar du you didn't mean.
Offline German: Pocket Lingo vs. Google Translate
Google Translate can translate supported language pairs offline after their language packs are downloaded. Pocket Lingo takes a different approach: it requires no Studio AM account and translates with a compatible model on your device. Set up the model you need before traveling; the app then works in airplane mode without sending the translation to a Studio AM server.
