Offline Italian Translator for iPhone
Translation stays on-device; web search opens externally only if you choose it.
Pocket Lingo translates Italian with a compatible model on your device after setup. Translation stays local; if you decline a result and explicitly choose web search, only then does the query open in an external service.
Why offline, for Italian
Italy looks wired until you step off the piazza. Signal dies inside meter-thick stone, drops in the switchbacks above the Amalfi coast, and thins out across the Tuscan and Umbrian valleys where the good towns hide. And the day the railway calls a sciopero (which it does, right on schedule), you'll want to read the notice and ask a real person a real question without waiting on a bar that isn't coming. On-device means it answers in airplane mode, on the ferry, in the back of a cave restaurant, wherever the trip actually happens.
Italian is a gift to read. It's spelled roughly the way it sounds, so you can guess your way down most of a menu. Saying it is the harder part: the gl in famiglia, the doubled consonants that quietly flip a word's meaning, the stress that lands where you don't expect, and the polite Lei you're meant to use with a shopkeeper. That's where a translator that speaks each phrase aloud, word by word, earns its keep: you hear it right before you risk it out loud.
Offline Italian: Pocket Lingo vs. Google Translate
Google Translate can translate supported language pairs offline after their language packs are downloaded. Pocket Lingo takes a different approach: it requires no Studio AM account and translates with a compatible model on your device. Set up the model you need before traveling; the app then works in airplane mode without sending the translation to a Studio AM server.
