Offline translation · Pocket Lingo
Offline French Translator for iPhone
Translation stays on-device; web search opens externally only if you choose it.
Pocket Lingo translates French with a compatible model on your device after setup. Translation stays local; if you decline a result and explicitly choose web search, only then does the query open in an external service.
Why offline, for French
French takes you far past Paris, into hill villages in Provence where one bar of signal is a good day, into Senegal or Côte d'Ivoire where a foreign SIM is slow and expensive, down the back roads of rural Quebec. Those are the exact moments you need to ask a price or read a sign, and they're exactly where a cloud translator goes quiet. On-device means it runs in airplane mode, off the grid, with roaming switched off: no signal required, no data burned. The translation happens on the phone in your hand, not on a server three countries away.
French is easy to read and merciless to pronounce: half the letters fall silent, words run together in liaison, and 'eaux' somehow lands as a plain 'oh.' Guessing wrong turns a polite question into a blank stare, and you're walking the vous-versus-tu line on top of it. That's why a translator that says the phrase aloud, word by word, beats one that only prints it: you hear the real thing and repeat it, instead of butchering the spelling out loud.
Offline French: Pocket Lingo vs. Google Translate
Google Translate can translate supported language pairs offline after their language packs are downloaded. Pocket Lingo takes a different approach: it requires no Studio AM account and translates with a compatible model on your device. Set up the model you need before traveling; the app then works in airplane mode without sending the translation to a Studio AM server.
