The Challenge

Mental arithmetic gets rusty without practice. Many drill apps are written for children or reward memorising answers without explaining a reusable method. Adults often need something calmer: learn why a shortcut works, try it, and revisit the weak spots that actually show up.

Our Approach

Hone Math teaches 66 mental-math skills across nine ordered units. Every skill pairs a named method with a plain-language explanation and a worked example. Practice then moves through a roughly three-minute Daily Workout, Smart Set, Quick Play, Rush, and three number puzzles rather than a single stream of flash cards.

The free mental-math methods and practice guide publishes all 66 explanations and examples plus a fixed, hand-checked 24-problem web sampler. The app separately turns the curriculum into generated practice and a local progress record.

Key Features

  • 66 methods across nine units: Foundations and times tables lead into mental addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, everyday arithmetic, and test-style patterns.
  • Short Daily Workout: A focused set of 15 problems designed to take roughly three minutes.
  • Practice that changes shape: Smart Set responds to practice history, Quick Play offers a flexible session, and Rush is a 60-second challenge.
  • Three number puzzles: Make Ten, Construct, and Cross-Math; Cross-Math ranges from compact 3×3 boards to 10×10 grids.
  • Mental Math Index: A 0 to 1000 rolling practice score based on recent answer accuracy, difficulty, and speed.
  • Useful progress detail: Review trends, records, strengths, weak spots, daily results, and every submitted answer.
  • Local reminders: Optional daily notifications are scheduled on the device and stop when paid access ends.
  • English and Spanish: The current app interface and instructional content are available in both languages.

Access and Data

Hone Math has no permanent free practice tier. After onboarding, starting practice requires an active monthly or annual subscription. Eligible new subscribers may receive a 3-day trial. StoreKit displays the current local billed amount, eligibility, renewal period, and terms before purchase. A retired lifetime product is not sold, but verified earlier owners retain full access through Restore Purchase.

The data door never depends on a subscription. From the hard paywall or the You tab, inspect the complete local record, export lossless JSON plus a readable plain-text summary, or delete it. Deleting the record does not cancel an Apple subscription.

There is no Studio AM account, advertising, analytics, tracking, cloud sync, or Studio AM data server. Practice works offline and progress stays locally on the device. StoreKit needs a connection to Apple for plans, purchase, restore, and entitlement verification; a user-requested export leaves only through the system share sheet.

Results

Hone Math gives adults a structured way to learn practical arithmetic methods, practise them in several formats, and see recent progress without ads or a child-focused reward system.

Common questions

Hone Math, listed on the App Store as Mental Math Puzzles & Practice, is an English- and Spanish-language iPhone and iPad app for adults who want to rebuild everyday arithmetic. It teaches 66 methods across nine units, then reinforces them with a roughly three-minute Daily Workout, adaptive practice, and number puzzles. The app has no permanent free practice tier; eligible new subscribers may receive a 3-day trial, and StoreKit shows the current local billed amount and renewal terms before purchase. Without active access, users can still inspect, export, or delete their complete local practice record. A retired lifetime product is not sold, but verified earlier owners retain access through Restore Purchase.

Is Hone Math free? How much does it cost?

Hone Math is free to download but has no permanent free practice tier. After onboarding, practice requires a monthly or annual subscription. Eligible new subscribers may receive a 3-day trial. StoreKit shows the current local billed amount, eligibility, renewal period, and terms before purchase.

What happens to my record if my subscription ends?

Your record remains yours. From the paywall, you can inspect every stored answer, day, streak, score, and per-skill result; export complete lossless JSON plus a readable plain-text summary; or delete the local record. Starting new practice requires active access.

What does Hone Math teach?

The curriculum contains 66 skills across nine units: foundations, times tables, mental addition, mental subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, everyday math, and test-style problems. Every skill includes a named method, a plain-language explanation, and a worked example.

How does practice work?

Daily Workout gives a short set of problems that takes roughly three minutes. Smart Set adapts to your practice history, Quick Play offers a flexible session, and Rush is a timed challenge. Make Ten, Cross-Math, and Construct provide three different number-puzzle formats.

What is the Mental Math Index?

It is a rolling score from 0 to 1000 based on the accuracy, difficulty, and speed of your recent submitted answers. It reflects recent practice rather than a lifetime exam score.

Can an earlier lifetime owner restore access?

Yes. The old lifetime product is no longer sold, but verified earlier purchasers retain full access. Use Restore Purchase on the paywall with the same Apple Account that made the purchase.

Is Hone Math private and does it work offline?

There is no Studio AM account, advertising, analytics, or tracking. Practice and progress work offline and the record stays locally on the device. An internet connection is needed for Apple to load plans, purchase, restore, and verify subscription access. User-requested exports leave only through the system share sheet.
