The Chessboard and the Rice

Human intuition is tuned for steady, straight-line change. If something grows by the same amount each step - one, two, three, four - we predict its future easily. But when a quantity grows by the same percentage each step, doubling again and again, our intuition fails badly, and the failure is worth understanding, because much of technology behaves this way.
An old story makes the point. A king offers a reward, and a clever courtier asks only for grains of rice on a chessboard: one grain on the first square, two on the second, four on the third, doubling across all sixty-four. It sounds modest. Yet the final square alone would require more rice than the world has ever grown. Repeated doubling starts so gently that it looks harmless, then turns overwhelming so fast that it seems to arrive from nowhere.
This is why forecasts about fast-doubling technologies are so often wrong in both directions. Early on, people overestimate, because the curve is still low and progress feels slow. Later, they underestimate, because the same curve has bent almost vertical and the numbers leave ordinary experience behind.
The practical discipline is to distrust your gut whenever a quantity doubles on a fixed schedule. Ask not how much it has grown but how often it doubles, because a modest-seeming doubling time, extended far enough, produces figures that no straight-line instinct can prepare you for.
