The First Day
Original passage © Studio AM, written for Fluency.
Nadia arrived at the bakery an hour before it opened. Her hands were cold and her stomach felt tight. It was her first day, and she did not know where anything was.
The baker, a tall man named Cole, handed her an apron. "Ask me anything," he said. "Everyone was new once." Nadia felt a little better.
She watched how Cole shaped the dough. She wrote down each step in a small notebook. When she made a mistake and dropped a tray, no one shouted. Cole just showed her how to hold it.
By noon, the shelves were full of warm bread. Nadia was tired, but she was proud. She had asked many questions, and now she knew a hundred small things she had not known that morning. Tomorrow would be easier.
