The Green Chair
Original passage © Studio AM, written for Fluency.
Every morning, people waited for the bus outside Mr. Iqbal's shop. There was no bench. One rainy day, he placed an old green chair beneath the awning.
The chair belonged to nobody in particular. A tired nurse sat first. Then a parent held a sleeping child there. People stood when an older rider arrived. Months passed. Paint peeled, and one leg began to wobble. Before Mr. Iqbal could repair it, the chair vanished. He thought someone had taken it.
The next morning, a bright green chair stood in the same place. A note underneath said, “The old one is being fixed.” Two days later it returned beside the new chair.
Mr. Iqbal had offered one seat. The neighborhood answered with two and a repair. No meeting created the custom. Repeated use had quietly taught people that waiting could be shared.
