The Picture Made of Tiny Dots

A screen picture is built from tiny parts called pixels. Each pixel can shine with a mix of red, green, and blue light. From nearby, the parts may look like colored dots.

Different brightness levels create many colors. Red and green light together can appear yellow. All three shining strongly can appear white. Dark pixels give off little light.

A screen places rows of pixels close together. From a normal viewing distance, the eye joins them into edges, letters, faces, and shadows. More pixels can show finer detail when the screen size and image support them.

A pixel does not know what it depicts. It follows a number telling each color how brightly to shine. Software changes many numbers rapidly to make video move. The complete picture emerges from a grid of small, coordinated lights.
