The Language Between Machines

Two computers can share a cable and still fail to communicate. A path is not enough. They need shared rules for formatting messages, identifying senders and receivers, and responding when information is lost. Such a rule set is called a protocol.

Consider mailing a package. An address follows an expected order. A label states where the package should go, while systems along the route decide the next step. The receiver can check whether the contents arrived intact. Network protocols divide digital information into packets and attach similar routing and checking information.

Different protocols solve different parts of communication. One may move packets reliably between programs. Another may define how a browser requests a web page. Layers allow engineers to replace one technology without redesigning everything above it. A wireless link and a fiber cable can carry the same higher-level request in different ways.

Shared rules do not require identical machines. That is their strength. A phone, server, and home router may be built by different companies, yet each can participate if it follows the relevant protocol. The useful “language” between machines is therefore less like a rich human conversation and more like a precise agreement about structure, sequence, and response.
