The Metal Rod That Guards a Roof

A lightning rod does not repel storms. It gives electric current a planned route if lightning strikes a building. A typical system includes a metal rod or network at the highest points, thick conductors running downward, and electrodes connected to the ground.

During a storm, electrical charge can build between cloud and ground. If a discharge connects with the building, metal conductors carry the large current toward Earth. Good connections and low-resistance paths matter because current can heat poor joints or jump across gaps. The system spreads charge into the soil away from easily burned materials.

The pointed rod is only one visible part. A rod without a continuous connection to ground cannot perform the full protective job. Other metal systems, such as pipes or rooftop equipment, may need bonding so dangerous voltage differences do not form between them. Surge protection can help shield electrical devices from sudden voltage changes that travel through wiring.

No system promises that lightning will never cause damage. Design must fit a building, and installation requires trained judgment. The useful idea is controlled conduction, not a magical shield. Lightning already seeks a path between regions of different electrical potential. A protection system prepares a route able to carry that energy while reducing opportunities for fire, structural damage, and injury.
