The Shared Thermostat Has No Neutral Number

A meeting room contains one thermostat and twelve bodies. One person sits beneath a vent in a coat; another loosens a collar beside a window. At first glance, setting one temperature looks equal. Yet the same air can place different burdens on different people. Is there a fair number?
The group could vote. Majority rule gives a clear result, but the same minority might lose every day. A fixed rule offers predictability, yet predictable discomfort is discomfort. Giving control to whoever reports the greatest need sounds responsive, but people describe sensation differently, and the loudest voice is not necessarily the strongest claim.
The puzzle reveals that a number does not become impartial merely because it appears on a machine. Fairness may also depend on the procedure around the dial: whether preferences can be voiced without embarrassment, whether seats or layers can change, and whether yesterday's decision can be revised. Such accommodations do not erase conflict. Heating and cooling use shared energy, and one adjustment can affect the entire room.
In the end, philosophy cannot supply a magic temperature. It can distinguish equality of setting from equality of consideration. A fair process gives reasons that others may question and leaves a path for correction when effects differ from expectations. The thermostat governs machinery. The community still decides whose experience counts and how disagreement will be carried.
