The Radio on the Ridge

Two handheld radios can lose contact when a hill stands between them. Many very-high-frequency signals travel mainly along paths that work best with a clear view between antennas. Rock, buildings, and Earth's curve can block or weaken that path.

A radio repeater solves part of the problem. It places a receiver and transmitter at a high site, such as a ridge or tall building. One radio sends on the repeater's input frequency. The receiver picks up the message, and the transmitter sends it out again on an output frequency. A person beyond the hill can then hear it.

Height does not make the signal bend through the rock. Instead, it gives the repeater a clearer path to radios on both sides. The system also depends on power, tuned equipment, and an agreed channel plan. The quiet box on the ridge works as a relay: it lets people coordinate across terrain that would otherwise divide their radios.
