The Red Dot in the Photographs

On the final evening of her museum internship, Salma found a red dot on every photograph from Camera Four. The dot seemed to hover beside an old clock, although the room was locked overnight. Her teammate Leon called it a wandering light. Salma wanted one more test before naming it.

They cleaned the camera lens and photographed a blank wall. The dot remained. They moved the camera across the room, and the dot moved with the image rather than staying beside the clock. At last, Leon shone a flashlight across the lens. A tiny scratch caught the beam and flashed red.

They could explain the photographs, but not how the scratch arrived. Salma wrote both conclusions in the log: the dot came from the lens, while the scratch’s history was unknown. The next morning, the curator praised the line between those claims. Leon replaced the lens, and their final photograph showed only the clock. Salma had hoped for a stranger mystery, yet the smaller honest answer pleased her more. Before leaving, she made a card reminding future interns to solve only what evidence could solve.
