Why a Ratchet Clicks

A socket wrench can tighten a bolt without making a full circle. Inside its head is a ratchet, a wheel with angled teeth. A small catch called a pawl rests against those teeth. When the handle moves in the working direction, the pawl pushes the wheel and turns the socket.
On the return stroke, the angled surfaces lift the pawl over each tooth. The wheel stays almost still while the handle moves back, producing the familiar clicks. Because the tool does not undo its last turn, a worker can reset the handle in a narrow space. A switch changes which side of the teeth the pawl engages, so the same wrench can tighten or loosen.
The design converts back-and-forth motion into one-way steps. Similar mechanisms appear in winches and other devices that must hold progress between strokes. The teeth and pawl carry repeated forces, so dirt or wear can make them slip. Cleaning, correct lubrication, and replacing damaged parts help preserve the grip. The useful feature is not the clicking sound itself; it is the controlled direction hidden beneath the sound.
