Louis Braille was born in France in 1809. A childhood injury left him unable to see, but he kept learning through touch and sound. At a school for blind students in Paris, he read books made with raised print. The letters could be felt, yet they were large and slow to read.

As a teenager, Braille learned about a code of raised dots designed for messages in darkness. He reshaped the idea into cells of six dots. Different patterns could represent letters, numbers, and music. Readers could recognize a whole cell under one fingertip, and they could write with simple tools.

Braille later taught at the same school. His system was not accepted everywhere during his life, but students valued its speed and clarity. Over time, the six-dot method spread widely. Braille's work gave blind readers a practical way to read, write, study, and share ideas for themselves.
