When the Telegraph Gathered the Weather

Before rapid communication, a weather observer could describe only the conditions already passing one place. Reports from distant coasts arrived too late to show a storm moving across a region. The electric telegraph changed that limitation by carrying short messages faster than the weather itself traveled.

In 1860, observers around the British and Irish coasts began sending daily readings to the Meteorological Office in London. They reported pressure, temperature, wind, cloud, rain, and sea conditions at an agreed time. Staff could place these separate observations side by side and see a broad pattern rather than isolated local events. Robert FitzRoy used the network to develop storm warnings, and the first warning was issued in February 1861. Signals displayed at ports then carried the message to ships near shore.

Early forecasts were imperfect and debated, but the method introduced a lasting idea. Weather becomes easier to understand when many places observe it in a consistent way at nearly the same time. The telegraph did not measure wind or pressure itself. Its contribution was connection: it turned scattered instruments and observers into a network, making a moving system visible.
