Maria Sibylla Merian learned about insects by keeping them close enough to watch. Born in Frankfurt in 1647, she trained in drawing and painting within a family connected to printing. As a young observer, she collected caterpillars, fed them the leaves on which she found them, and recorded their changes. This method joined art to patient experiment: the insect remained connected to its food plant and to each stage of its life.

Many Europeans still repeated confused ideas about how insects appeared. Merian's paintings instead placed egg, caterpillar, pupa, and adult together around a living plant. They were not decorations arranged at random. They presented change as a sequence that anyone could inspect.

In 1699, Merian traveled with her younger daughter to Suriname, then a Dutch colony, to study tropical insects. The journey was unusual for a woman of her time and depended on knowledge and labor from Indigenous and enslaved people whose names were rarely preserved in European records. Illness shortened the stay, but Merian returned with notes, specimens, and paintings. In 1705, she published a large illustrated book about Suriname's insects.

Some details in that book were later corrected, as happens in observational science. Its deeper achievement remained: Merian showed animals in relationship with plants rather than as isolated specimens. Her pages asked readers to follow feeding, transformation, and habitat together. The beauty of the images carried the argument, but close watching supplied its structure.
