On a clear, calm night, a hollow at the foot of a slope may frost while trees higher up remain untouched. The difference can appear backward, since everyone learns that air is colder at greater height. That broad rule describes much of the atmosphere, but the last few meters above the ground can behave differently.

After sunset, the land releases heat toward the open sky. The ground cools, then chills the thin layer of air touching it. Cooler air is usually denser than warmer air nearby, so gravity draws it downslope like a slow, shallow flow. When that air reaches a basin or meets a hedge, it can collect in a cold pool. Plants inside the pool may reach the frost point even when a thermometer on the upper slope stays above it.

Clouds and wind can interrupt the pattern. Clouds reduce the ground's heat loss, while a steady breeze mixes the cold layer with warmer air above.
