Why the Heavy Door Closes Gently

A heavy public door may swing open easily and then close without slamming. The small box above it is a door closer. Inside, a spring and a chamber of oil work together.
When you pull the door open, an arm turns a shaft and squeezes the spring. The spring stores energy. Once you let go, that energy pushes the door back toward its frame. A spring alone would move too quickly. Instead of letting it snap shut, the closer forces oil through a narrow valve. The restricted flow slows the arm and controls the door's speed.
Near the end of the swing, a separate adjustment may let the door move firmly enough to reach the latch. The settings must balance several needs. The door should give a person time to pass, resist a hard slam, and still close fully. A trained maintainer can adjust some closers for the door and setting. This quiet mechanism turns one pull into a controlled return, helping a shared entrance work again and again.
