The Sentence That Says It Is False

Consider this sentence: “This sentence is false.” If it is true, then what it says must hold, so it is false. If it is false, then its claim of being false seems true.

This puzzle is called the liar paradox. It uses self-reference: the sentence points back to itself. Ordinary true-or-false labels seem to chase each other in a circle. Neither label settles quietly at once, because each one immediately invites its opposite.

Philosophers and logicians offer different responses. Some limit which sentences can speak about their own truth. Others use systems with more than two truth values. The puzzle matters because it shows that simple-looking language can strain the rules used to evaluate it.
