Granville T. Woods worked with electrical and mechanical systems during the rapid expansion of railways in the late nineteenth century. He gained practical experience in machine shops, on ships, and around trains, then developed and patented improvements involving railway communication and control.

Rail lines created a difficult information problem. Dispatchers and train crews needed to know where trains were and whether track ahead was clear, yet moving vehicles could not rely on a fixed office wire in the ordinary way. Woods designed systems that used electrical induction to exchange signals between moving trains and equipment beside the track.

His patents covered more than one device, and later summaries sometimes compress them into a single invention with a simple nickname. The details changed across designs.
