Why E-Ink Holds Still

An electronic-paper display can keep showing a page even when it is not using power. Its screen contains tiny capsules filled with light and dark charged particles. An electric field moves selected particles toward the visible surface.

To make a dark mark, the device brings dark particles to the top in certain places. To make a light area, it moves light particles upward instead. After the field stops, the particles remain largely in position. The image therefore holds still without being redrawn many times each second.

Power is needed when the page changes, and the device still uses energy for other tasks. E-ink is not a glowing screen; it usually reflects surrounding light. Its stable particles explain both the paperlike appearance and the low energy needed to display an unmoving page.
