As a student in Karnal, India, Kalpana Chawla watched aircraft and became interested in how machines move through air. Spaceflight was not a nearby or guaranteed path. She first built a foundation through study, earning an engineering degree in aeronautics in India, then continuing her education in the United States in aerospace engineering.

Chawla's work combined theory with exacting computation. She studied how air flows around aircraft and worked with methods for modeling complex moving surfaces. After joining the United States space program, she trained across many systems rather than preparing for one dramatic moment. Astronaut work included simulations, technical assignments, physical practice, teamwork, and repeated responses to possible failures.

She first flew in space aboard the shuttle Columbia in 1997. Her responsibilities included operating a robotic arm and supporting scientific work. The mission also required the crew to respond to a satellite deployment problem, showing that preparation mattered precisely when a plan changed.

Chawla returned to Columbia for a research mission in 2003. The shuttle was lost during reentry, and all seven crew members died.
