The Road Built on a Footpath

Imagine a town whose first footpath bends around a wet field. Carts begin using it, so workers add gravel. Shops face the busier route. Later the town lays water pipes beneath it, builds houses beside it, and finally covers it with pavement. By then the field has been drained. A straight road might serve new traffic better, but moving the old road would also mean moving pipes, entrances, and businesses.
This is path dependence: earlier choices change the cost and range of later choices. The original bend may have been sensible when the field was wet. After the reason disappears, the route can remain because people have built around it.
Path dependence does not mean that change is impossible or that the first choice always wins. A town may build a bypass when congestion becomes costly enough. A software community may replace an old format when conversion tools improve. The idea is that history changes the comparison. A design is judged not against a blank world, but against the expense of leaving the system already in use.
This matters when making early standards. A choice that is cheap to revise today can gather users, training, tools, and physical structures. Each new layer makes revision harder. Builders should therefore ask two questions: what works now, and what will other people have to rebuild if this choice later changes?
