The Screws That Did Not Fit

In the Second World War, American mechanics repairing British equipment kept hitting one failure: the screws did not fit. Both measured in inches, but the angle and spacing of their grooves differed slightly. An American nut would not seat on a British bolt; damaged machines sat idle while fasteners crossed an ocean.
A century earlier, Joseph Whitworth had shown the fix. In 1841 he collected sample screws from workshops across England and proposed one thread for the whole country. It worked: a bolt from one factory fit a nut from another, and machines could be repaired with stock parts instead of hand-fitted ones.
Notice what the standard never claimed: that Whitworth's 55-degree thread was the best angle. A 60-degree thread works too; the Americans used one. The value was not in the number but in the agreement, because interchangeable parts exist only among people who cut the same groove.
The war exposed the limit: an agreement stops at the border of those who joined it. In 1948 Britain, America, and Canada unified their threads. The rule outlives screws: the cost of standardizing is argument today; the cost of not standardizing is discovered later, at the worst time.
