The Night Shift

Original passage © Studio AM, written for Fluency.

While the city sleeps, Priya is already at work. She is a baker, and her day begins at two in the morning, long before the sun. The streets are empty and quiet as she walks to the shop. Inside, the ovens are cold, and she must bring them to life.

She mixes the dough she prepared the night before and shapes each loaf by hand. The work is steady and warm, and she likes the peace of these dark hours. There is no one to serve yet, only bread to make. By the time the first customers arrive at six, the shelves are full and the whole shop smells of fresh bread.

Priya rarely sees the busy afternoon; by then she is home and asleep. Most people would find her hours strange. But she has come to love the quiet start, when the city is still and the day belongs only to her.
