Market Morning
Original passage © Studio AM, written for Fluency.
On Saturday mornings, the town square fills with tables of food. Farmers drive in before dawn to set out what they picked the day before. There are red tomatoes still warm from the field, green beans, brown eggs, and jars of honey that catch the light.
Grandmother Ines has come to this market for forty years. She moves slowly from table to table, feeling each fruit, smelling the herbs. She knows which farmer grows the sweetest melons and which one to trust for fish. The sellers know her too, and often slip an extra plum into her bag.
Ines could buy the same food, cheaper, at the large store across town. But she comes here for more than food. She comes to see faces she knows, to hear how the crops did this year, and to feel part of the town. When her bag is full, she sits on a bench and watches, in no hurry to leave.
