The Nest in the Flower Pot
Original passage © Studio AM, written for Fluency.
All winter, Maya planned her balcony garden. She drew maps: beans here, tomatoes there, one big blue pot for sunflowers in the sunny corner.
In March she took her soil out. But in the blue pot sat a brown bird on a nest of twigs and string. Two pale eggs lay under her.
Maya wanted that corner. It got the best sun. She stood a long time with her trowel. Then she watered around the pot.
The chicks hatched in April and flew in May. Maya planted her sunflowers late, and they bloomed small. But all summer the bird sang from her rail, and Maya thought her garden had grown more than flowers.
