Ten Minutes of Walking

Original passage © Studio AM, written for Fluency.

When I cannot solve a problem, I stop and go for a walk.

At my desk, I stare at the same screen and the same words. My mind goes in a small circle. Outside, the street gives me new things to look at. A bus, a dog, a red door. My body moves, and my thoughts begin to move too.

I do not try to think hard while I walk. That is the point. I let the problem sit in the back of my mind. Often, by the time I come home, one small part of it has become clear. The answer was not on the street. It was already in my head, but it needed room.

Ten minutes is enough. A walk is a cheap tool, and I keep forgetting to use it.
