What does Pocket Lingo do?
It is a private travel translator, phrasebook, and language coach for iPhone and iPad. Translate text, speech, photos, menus, and two-way conversations through compatible models that run on your device. Hold-to-talk is the default conversation mode. An optional hands-free mode adds live captions, automatic turn switching, mute, end, and side controls. A hand-checked phrasebook covers 14 travel languages, with spoken audio, short lessons, and practice.
Which languages does it support?
Translation coverage depends on the active on-device model. The optional enhanced model supports up to 22 languages. The hand-checked phrasebook separately covers 14 travel languages.
Does it really work offline?
Yes, after any required model setup. Text, voice, camera, photo, menu, and conversation translation run on-device; the phrasebook and read-aloud do not need a translation model. A connection is still needed to download a model or use App Store purchase and restore services.
Which devices does it work on?
Pocket Lingo requires iOS or iPadOS 26 or later. It uses Apple Intelligence where available or offers an optional enhanced-model download on supported devices. The app explains the available path during setup; unsupported hardware cannot run translation features.
The app says translation needs a model. How do I fix that?
On an Apple Intelligence device, make sure Apple Intelligence is enabled and ready. On another supported device, follow Pocket Lingo’s setup for the optional enhanced model. Keep the device on Wi-Fi and power until the download finishes, then reopen the app.
How do I hear pronunciation?
Tap the speaker on any translation or phrase. It reads aloud with the current word highlighted, so you can follow along. Tap again to stop.
Is my data private?
Pocket Lingo requires no Studio AM account, cloud translation, tracking, or ads. Translation performed in the app stays on-device. If you decline a result and explicitly choose web search, that query opens in an external service.
Are translations always perfect?
Translations are AI-generated on-device and checked so the output is really in the target language. For anything important, including medical or legal information, double-check with a human. The curated phrasebook is human-verified.
Is there a free plan, and what does Pro cost?
There is no functional free plan. Monthly and yearly subscriptions are sold to new customers. The App Store shows the current local price and any introductory offer for which you are eligible before purchase. The older lifetime product is no longer sold but remains restore-only for verified previous owners.
What happens if my subscription ends?
Your saved translations and phrases remain readable, searchable, exportable, and deletable in the archive. New translations, phrasebook, lessons, drills, practice, camera, menu, conversation, and other app features remain locked until you restore access.
