Privacy Policy

Local by default: Better Writing edits English with an on-device model. Studio AM does not receive your writing, operate a writing server, or require an account. Saved writing and study progress stay local unless you enable optional private iCloud sync. Content leaves only through an Apple service or destination you explicitly choose, as described below.

1. Information Studio AM collects

Studio AM collects no personal information or writing through Better Writing. The app has no Studio AM account, advertising, third-party analytics, cross-app tracking, telemetry upload, or remote AI-processing log.

2. Data kept on the device

Better Writing stores saved sessions and turns, original and improved text, explanations and correction categories, dates, starred state, pending draft source text, study state, writing preferences, coach-plan progress, app settings, and notification preferences locally. Screenshot Reply temporarily stages a user-selected image or recognized transcript for the app handoff; the app does not upload either to Studio AM.

Anonymous aggregate funnel and model-quality counters (such as a paywall view, successful generation, or guardrail retry) are stored locally in UserDefaults. They contain no writing, account, advertising identifier, or device identifier and are never transmitted automatically. Internal builds may display or export those counts only through an explicit local action.

3. On-device AI and media processing

Rewriting, Draft mode, screenshot text recognition, Reply drafting, coaching, practice, and Ask Your Writing run on the device. Better Writing uses Apple’s built-in on-device model when available. Other supported devices may download a local model: approximately 0.9 GB on devices meeting the 3.5 GB memory floor, or approximately 2.6 GB on devices meeting the 5.5 GB memory floor. The app does not send prompts or output to a Studio AM or third-party AI server.

The microphone button uses Apple’s on-device-only speech recognizer to fill the English input field. Dictation audio is processed on the device and is not retained; the resulting transcript becomes ordinary local draft text. Read-aloud uses Apple’s installed system speech voices. Pro can optionally download a natural voice of about 320 MB; its synthesis also runs locally.

4. Optional private iCloud sync

Sync with iCloud is off by default. If you enable it, Apple syncs supported saved writing and study progress through the app’s private CloudKit database in your Apple Account. Studio AM cannot view, query, or download that private database. Apple provides the service under your Apple Account settings and terms. Model files, the optional natural voice, and local diagnostic counters are not part of that sync.

5. App extensions, widgets, and shortcuts

The Share extension can save user-selected text or a conversation screenshot in the app’s private App Group container for manual opening in Better Writing. It does not edit or recognize text inside the extension. The main app checks access again before it edits text, recognizes a screenshot, or drafts a reply. If access is not confirmed, the original item is not edited. A pending handoff remains local until the app consumes or clears it, and it is not sent to Studio AM.

App Shortcuts can hand explicitly selected text or clipboard text to the main app through the same private container. Fresh improvement work still requires verified access and a compatible on-device model. Better Writing widgets read a small local entitlement mirror and deterministic grammar-rule content. They do not display saved writing. Tapping a widget can open the grammar library, subscription screen, or Improve Clipboard flow in the app. Siri and Shortcuts receive only the text or command you explicitly provide through Apple’s App Intents system.

6. Network use and external destinations

A connection may be used for:

• downloading a compatible on-device language model or optional natural voice;
• loading StoreKit plans and purchasing, restoring, or verifying access;
• private iCloud sync for saved writing and study progress, but only after you enable it;
• opening App Store, subscription-management, Studio AM, support, privacy, terms, email, or cross-promotion links you tap;
• sharing or saving a user-created export through Apple’s system share sheet; and
• opening the exact declined Ask Your Writing question as a DuckDuckGo search in your default browser, only after you tap Search the web.

The last two actions send content to the destination you choose. Better Writing does not fetch web-search results inside the app and never performs that search automatically.

7. Purchases and access

Better Writing offers monthly and annual auto-renewable subscriptions through Apple. Eligible new subscribers may receive a 3-day introductory trial; Apple determines eligibility and shows the current local price and renewal terms before purchase. Prices can change. A retired lifetime product is not sold to new customers but remains restore-only for verified earlier owners. Apple processes payment details; Studio AM does not receive card information.

8. Your access, export, and deletion controls

Previously saved sessions remain available without active access. You can read, search, copy, and individually delete them from All sessions. Both export actions remain available without a subscription under Your data in Settings and Archive settings.

Export my writing (Markdown) creates BetterWriting-sessions.md. It contains every saved session in newest-first order and each session’s turns in reading order, including original input, improved output, explanations, star state, a pending uncommitted draft, and distinct source notes such as the notes behind a saved Draft.

Export complete archive creates BetterWriting-complete-archive.json. It is the machine-complete copy of app-owned data: saved sessions and turns, unattached turns, pending fields and handoff identifiers, study and coach state, profile answers, preferences and other owned settings, App Group work, and a pending Reply payload when one exists. It is a portable record, not a promise of an in-app restore function.

Creating or continuing edits, drafts, replies, coaching, practice, reminders, model work, natural-voice playback, and other fresh writing features requires active Pro access or a restored lifetime entitlement. The system voice can still read a result that was saved before access ended.

Export files are created locally and handed to Apple’s share sheet; the chosen destination controls any copy saved outside Better Writing. Deleting a session removes that app record and, if private iCloud sync is enabled, participates in Apple’s normal private-database synchronization. Uninstalling removes local app data but does not automatically delete exports you saved elsewhere or private iCloud data governed by your Apple Account.

9. App Lock and notifications

App Lock asks iOS to authenticate with the available device credential, Face ID, or Touch ID. Better Writing receives only success or failure, not biometric data. Optional writing reminders are local notifications. Paid reminder schedules are tied to verified access and are canceled or not scheduled beyond subscription expiry.

10. Children’s privacy

Better Writing is not directed at children under 13. Studio AM collects no personal information or writing through the app, including from children.

11. Changes to this policy

If Better Writing’s data practices change, this page will be updated and the effective date revised before the change ships.
