What is Hone Spatial?

Hone Spatial is a daily spatial-reasoning practice app built on twelve classic puzzle types across six units: mental rotation (3D block figures and flat shapes), folding (punch-and-unfold and cube nets), cross-sections and orthographic views, block counting and exposed faces, mechanical reasoning (gear trains and pulleys), and perspective (viewpoints and hidden figures). Each five-minute session mixes rounds at a difficulty that adapts to you, every puzzle is generated fresh with a constructed answer key, and each unit is taught strategy-first with worked examples.

Will this actually improve my spatial reasoning?

This is the one claim of its kind we make, and we make it with the evidence attached: Uttal and colleagues’ 2013 meta-analysis of 217 studies found that spatial training produces durable gains that transfer to new spatial tasks (effect size g ≈ 0.47). The same literature finds that strategy instruction is a large part of the effect, which is why every unit leads with technique (the chirality check, folding backwards, the gear rules) rather than bare puzzles. What we do not claim: anything about IQ, and anything clinical.

Is this an IQ test?

No. Hone Spatial produces no intelligence score, does not rank you against other people, and never diagnoses anything. Its numbers are performance measurements on specific puzzle families (your rotation rate in degrees per second, your accuracy by unit), useful for watching your own skill grow, and nothing more.

Does it help with the ASVAB or mechanical-aptitude tests?

The mechanical unit is built from the actual content of those test sections: gear train direction and speed, pulley mechanical advantage, and rotation. The folding and rotation drills are staples of spatial-ability testing generally. Practising here is practising that material, with the underlying rules taught explicitly: meshed gears alternate, a shared shaft turns together, the rope-segment count IS the mechanical advantage.

How much does it cost? Is there a free tier?

There is no free tier: practice and lesson texts require a subscription. Eligible new subscribers get a 3-day free trial; Apple shows eligibility and local terms before purchase. The US prices are $4.99 per month or $29.99 per year.

What can I access without a subscription?

Everything you have already made. Your session history, streaks, and every measurement already taken stay readable forever, with or without an active subscription, and you can export or erase all of it from Settings at any time. The lesson list and unit titles are always visible. The subscription covers new practice and opening lesson texts.

What do the lessons teach?

Sixteen short lessons across six units, each leading with the technique that solves its puzzle family: holistic rotation and the chirality check, unfolding backwards, the cube-net rules, what a slice can and cannot be, counting by columns because nothing floats, the gear and pulley rules, standing at another viewpoint, and the meta-skills: sketching, and recognising when verbal encoding fails. Where a lesson has a measurement behind it, it shows YOUR number from your own rounds.

How does difficulty work?

Each drill adapts separately on a shared level scale: figures grow more complex, folds stack deeper, gear trains grow longer, oblique cuts and front views arrive at higher levels. Strong rounds push a drill up; misses ease it back. Your levels persist between sessions, and guessing cannot climb: chance accuracy sits far below the promotion bar.

Can I take my time on a puzzle?

Yes. Every puzzle is self-paced, and reaching for pen and paper is a legitimate strategy we actively teach. Solve times feed your own speed metrics, but there is no countdown and switching apps mid-round loses nothing. Items left open for over a minute are simply excluded from the time averages so an interruption cannot skew your numbers.

Does Hone Spatial need the internet?

No. Every puzzle and lesson works offline. The network is used only by Apple’s StoreKit for plans, purchase, and restore. Access is never revoked just because you are offline.

Does the app collect or sync my data?

No. There is no account, no analytics, no tracking, and no cloud sync. Your results, levels, streaks, and every measurement are stored locally on your device and never leave it. Settings can export everything as readable files, or erase it all.

How do I restore a purchase?

Open the paywall and tap Restore Purchases. If Apple verifies the transaction, access returns without buying again. Subscriptions are managed through your Apple ID settings; a free trial ends without charge if you cancel before it is over.
