What is Hone Listening?

A daily English listening practice app. Its core exercise is dictation: the app speaks a sentence, you type what you heard, and it marks your answer word by word. Eight drills cover full dictation, gap-fill, the small grammar words English swallows, connected speech, word boundaries, minimal pairs, numbers, and names spelled out letter by letter. The App Store listing is named English Listening & Dictation.

How much does it cost? Is there a free tier?

There is no free tier: practice and lessons require a subscription. Eligible new subscribers get a 3-day free trial; Apple shows eligibility and local terms before purchase. The US prices are $4.99 per month or $29.99 per year.

Why is my answer marked wrong when it sounds the same?

Homophones are marked strictly on purpose. "Their" and "they're", "its" and "it's", "your" and "you're" are acoustically identical; only the grammar of the sentence chooses between them, and choosing correctly is the skill being tested. Everything that is not the skill is forgiven: capitalisation, punctuation, extra spaces, contractions typed either way, and numerals in place of number words all pass.

Why do I keep missing small words like "to" and "of"?

Because they were barely said. English spends time on the words that carry information and rushes the grammar in between, reducing to, of, and, was and have to almost nothing. That is not a failure of attention. It is what the language does. One drill puts the gaps on exactly those words, and the Learn tab explains the mechanics.

What is the natural voice, and why is it a download?

The natural voice is Kokoro-82M, a speech model that runs entirely on your device. It is about 310 MB, so it is downloaded once rather than bundled into the app, and only when you turn it on. Until then, and any time it is unavailable, the built-in system voice is used, and every drill works normally.

Does it work offline?

Yes. The system voice and every drill work with no connection at all. The only network request the app makes is downloading the natural voice, and Apple's own StoreKit for the subscription.

Can I slow the audio down?

Every item plays at 0.75x, 1x or 1.25x, and words highlight as they are spoken so you can see where in the sentence the audio has reached. Comprehension at speed is a separate skill from comprehension, which is why the control sits on the practice screen rather than buried in settings.

Is this IELTS or TOEFL preparation?

No. It is ordinary listening practice with graded audio and immediate feedback. There is no exam format, no band score, and no claim that drilling here changes a test result.

How do I delete my data?

Settings has a reset that erases your practice record from the device. There is nothing to delete anywhere else, because nothing is sent anywhere: no account, no analytics, no tracking.
